The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University
seeks to appoint a Research Associate to work full time for 3 years on Dr
Danielle Turton’s Leverhulme Research Project grant entitled “Changing /r/
Accents: towards a sociophonological understanding of the mechanisms of sound
change”. The project aims to address theoretical questions of sound change by
combining experimental articulatory analysis (using ultrasound tongue imaging)
with traditional sociolinguistic interviews to investigate the loss of
rhoticity in East Lancashire.
You will have a PhD in sociolinguistics, phonology, phonetics or related area
(submitted prior to project start date); a track-record of conference
presentations and publications commensurate with your career stage; experience
in creating and analysing sociophonetic corpora; expertise in instrumental
phonetic analysis; an excellent grasp of cutting-edge linguistic tools such as
R, Praat, forced-alignment and Articulate Assistant Advanced; an interest in
sound change from a sociolinguistic, phonetic or phonological perspective.
Alongside the PI, you will be responsible for building a corpus of
sociolinguistic interviews with locals, as well as the experimental design and
recording of the ultrasound tongue imaging component of the project. You will
be responsible for overseeing the transcription and forced-alignment of data
(assisted by undergraduate transcribers), and the majority of the ultrasound
analysis. You will work with the PI on the statistical analysis, data
visualisation and interpretation of results. With the PI, you will present
findings at conferences, and co-author papers for publication. You will
assist the PI in the day-to-day administration of the project, and lead on the
organisation of a project workshop in the final months of the post. The post
is based in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster
University, and affiliated with the Phonetics Lab Research Group.
