Subject: Oxford English Dictionary African American English Project
The OED is currently conducting an editorial project whose aim is to broaden
its coverage of African-American English by focusing on older, more
geographically widespread words and phrases that are familiar to African
Americans of all ages and are used by them chiefly in in-group contexts.
The objective is to document more of the words that African Americans use with
each other and that reflect aspects of their lived experiences, regardless of
these words’ uptake outside of African-American communities.
We are inviting researchers with expertise in African-American English and
African-American Language to contribute to the project by joining the OED
Researchers Advisory Group and suggesting words and phrases that the
dictionary should consider for inclusion. The OED Researchers Advisory Group
is an online interactive space for the academic community to interact with the
OED team and among themselves.
Scholars can also choose to be involved in later stages of the OED’s
African-American English editorial project by sharing their research and ideas
on the platform and joining forums discussing various aspects of the
African-American lexicon.
