Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Syntax

Required Language(s): Icelandic (isl)

Description:

The University of Iceland welcomes applications for a funded PhD program
within the School of Humanities. Qualified individuals with an MA degree in
Icelandic, English or Linguistics are invited to apply. The doctoral project
is a research of adverbial clauses in Icelandic and related languages. The
grant is for three years. Work on the doctoral program should preferably
commence in May or June 2021.

Main Project and Responsibilities:
The proposed project aims to investigate the nature of syntactic subordination
in general and the properties of adverbial clauses (ACs) in particular, using
the Scandinavian languages as a test case with a special emphasis on
Icelandic. The main empirical goal of the project is to provide a systematic
and detailed comparison of the applicability of main clause phenomena (MCP) in
various types of ACs, both by collecting questionnaire data and using existing
tagged corpora. The concrete theoretical goal is to compare the most recent
approaches to the syntax of ACs to account for the distribution of MCP. The
central research question is to what extent adverbial clauses are reminiscent
to argument clauses on the one hand and relative clauses on the other hand.
The research project would be the first systematic overview of the syntax of
ACs in Scandinavian from a comparative perspective.

The PhD student should be enrolled in a full-time program at the University of
Iceland during the grant period. The supervisor is Dr. Ásgrímur Angantýsson,
professor of Icelandic linguistics.

Qualifications:
Education and qualifications:
- MA degree in Icelandic, English or Linguistics (first class grade).
- Proficiency in Icelandic and English.
- A solid background in generative syntax.
- An enthusiasm for the subject matter and a determination to finish a
doctorate program at the University of Iceland.

The doctoral student is enrolled in a PhD program at the Icelandic or English
faculties of the University of Iceland. The chosen applicant, working with the
supervisor, applies for a PhD program in Icelandic or English at the
University of Iceland before a formal decision is made on the grant. This
program can be applied to outside the traditional application period of PhD
programs at the University of Iceland and the applicant will be assisted
throughout the application process.

Further Information:
The doctoral grant is funded by the UI Doctoral Grant Fund and is paid out in
fixed monthly payments to support the PhD student during their studies. The
grant amount is 425,000 ISK a month, which includes wages and wage-related
expenses. The student is also allowed to teach part time, up to 20% of a
full-time position. The PhD student signs an employment contract with the
School of Humanities which is based on a contract for the grant itself.

Further information about requirements and the application process can be
found here at the application link provided below.

The application should include:
- A CV and bibliography.
- A written application (ca. 2,000 words) describing the applicant’s interest
in the subject matter and how they envision their approach to the research.
- A record of previous education and certificates (BA and MA).
- Two references, including their contact information.

All applicants will receive a reply and be notified once the position has been
filled. Applications are valid for up to three months from the deadline for
the application. The prospective PhD student is expected to start work in
June, 2021.

The hiring process at the University of Iceland follows the University’s Equal
Rights Plan: https://english.hi.is/university/equal_rights_policy. Applicants
are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the University of Iceland
