Control of Nasality in Speech Production
About the Project:
A PhD student position is available for a highly motivated individual with an
interest in studying aspects of the voluntary and involuntary control of
nasality in speech in speakers with typical and disordered speech.
The research project continues and expands a program of research about
oral-nasal balance in speech that has investigated assessment and intervention
aspects of oral-nasal balance. The long-term goal of this research is to
develop a better understanding of velopharyngeal motor control and the
regulation of nasality, which will form the basis for more effective
strategies for the diagnosis and remediation of hypernasal speech.
The student will be fully funded for four years and work in the laboratory of
Dr. Tim Bressmann in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at the
University of Toronto, Canada (https://slp.utoronto.ca). The student will
benefit from the friendly and inclusive culture of the department and the
Rehabilitation Sciences Institute (https://rsi.utoronto.ca) in a highly
motivating working environment.

- Applicants should have an MSc or equivalent degree in Speech-Language
Pathology, Linguistics, Phonetics, Psychology, or a related discipline.
- Exceptionally promising applicants with a BSc degree and demonstrated
potential (i.e., scientific publications) may also be considered for entry
into the MSc program and fast-track into the PhD.
- Prior experience with speech research and/ or recruiting participants would
be an asset.
- Self‐motivated and hard-working, with a keen interest in speech research.
- A strong academic background.
- Proficiency in English.
- Excellent communication, written and interpersonal skills.
