Subject: Celtic; Historical Linguistics; Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics: Post Doc, University of Oxford, UK

University or Organization: University of Oxford
Department: Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics
Job Location: Oxford, United Kingdom
Web Address: https://www.ling-phil.ox.ac.uk/
Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Linguistics/Celtic Studies
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Historical Linguistics; Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Required Language(s): Celtic

Description:

The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics seeks a research associate
to be part of a team carrying out a UK–German Collaborative Research Project
in the Arts and Humanities awarded to Professor David Willis (University of
Oxford) and Professor Roland Meyer (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) by the
Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and in collaboration with Dr Marieke Meelen
(University of Cambridge).

The project, The History of Pronominal Subjects in the Languages of Northern
Europe looks from a comparative perspective at the historical development of
the morphosyntax of subject pronouns in the Celtic, Slavonic and Germanic
languages, including the emergence and loss of null subjects and issues
concerning information structure involving subject pronouns
(https://www.slawistik.hu-berlin.de/de/member/meyerrol/pronounhistory). It
involves a substantial element of corpus development, including the
enhancement of parsed corpora for several of the languages under
investigation.

The Oxford team will focus on the Celtic languages, English and Dutch, and the
appointee, who will have a completed or close-to-completion PhD in
Linguistics, Celtic Studies, or a related field (e.g. Computer Science with a
focus on language) will be expected to develop research on aspects of the
historical morphosyntax and historical corpora of one or more of the Celtic
languages under the guidance of the Oxford PI, Professor David Willis. They
will require expertise in the historical linguistics of at least one Celtic
language; a demonstrated interest in the study of historical morphosyntax; and
a demonstrated interest in the development of historical linguistic corpora.

This full-time post is tenable from 1 July 2021 (or as soon as possible
thereafter) for 28 months, and is non-renewable.
