Subject: Call for Book Chapter Proposals: Games for Students of Linguistics

Gamification – using game thinking and game mechanics for educational purposes
– is building momentum. Several journals are dedicated to this exciting new
trend: the International Journal of Game-based Learning, Serious Games, and
the Electronic Journal of e-Learning, among others. There is also an annual
conference, the European Conference on Game-based Learning, this year held in
Brighton, UK. Educators recognized the value of gaming long ago: motivation,
feedback, collaboration, engagement coupled with low anxiety make games a
perfect tool for the acquisition of new knowledge. Games are often responsible
for generating a so-called state of flow, a highly focused mental state
conducive to productivity (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).

The aim of this edited collection is to bring together games that would help
students of linguistics to develop and practice the fundamental concepts in
Phonetics & Phonology, Syntax & Morphology, and Semantics & Pragmatics.
Examples of the games might include coloring the anatomical structure of the
vocal tract, solving crosswords with the key terminology from syntax, card
games that explore concepts from semantics, etc. The games should be designed
and piloted with undergraduate students of linguistics at the university
level. Only successful and highly engaging games should be submitted.

Proposals should not exceed 500 words and include the following:

1) Brief description of the game
2) The name of the course, in which the game was used
3) A few sentences about the skills that the game enhances

Submissions to this edited collection will be prioritized in editorial
processing, reviewing, and publication. Upon acceptance of a chapter proposal,
guidelines for preparing final chapters will be provided. The final chapter
will consist of the actual game materials – graphics, cards, worksheets, etc.,
and the instructions on how to play. Chapters must be original work and not
under review for publication elsewhere.

Deadlines:

- Proposal submission: May 28, 2021
- Notification of accepted proposals: June 31, 2021
- Complete chapters submission: July 30, 2021
- Reviewing and revisions: September 30, 2021
- Envisioned publication date: Autumn 2021

Proposals should be submitted to Vita V. Kogan, Department of Modern Language
and Linguistics, the University of Kent, UK. Email: v.kogan at kent.ac.uk
