Subject: George Mason launches Graduate certificate in Spanish Heritage Language Education (online)
George Mason's Department of Modern & Classical Languages announces a new
graduate certificate in Spanish Heritage Language Education, launching late
August 2021 (application deadline August 1). This 15-credit program can be
completed fully online.
Students develop familiarity with the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and
cultural characteristics of Spanish-speakers in the US; heritage language
educational policy and practice; and social justice-oriented, antiracist
approaches to teaching Spanish. The certificate prepares educators and
affiliated professionals to advocate for heritage speakers of Spanish as well
as to develop and implement teaching curricula, materials, and pedagogies for
Spanish heritage language education.
The certificate may be completed as a stand-along program or as an add-on to
an MA with a concentration in Spanish. Educators seeking professional
development opportunities and graduate students at other universities are also
welcome to enroll in individual courses as non-degree students.
