Linguistic Field(s): Language Acquisition
Call Deadline: 15-Jul-2021
Meeting Description:
21st International Annual Conference of the Japan Second Language Association
(J-SLA2021)
Dates: 23-24, October
Venue: Online format
Invited Speaker: Dr. Heather Marsden (The University of York)
J-SLA Vision Statement:
We hereby establish the Japan Second Language Association (abbreviated: J-SLA)
for the express purpose of promoting within Japan the advancement of research
into second language development that seeks to elucidate the process of second
language acquisition through theoretically grounded analyses of empirical
data.
Our approach sees second language acquisition research as a scientific field
of study on par with cognitive science, first language acquisition research,
and linguistics, one that does not, therefore, depend on whether the findings
have a direct application to foreign language education per se. Ascertaining
the mechanisms of second language acquisition through a rigorous scientific
method will contribute, along with other areas of cognitive science, to our
understanding of human cognition.
Call for Papers:
J-SLA 2021 invites applications for the following three types of research
presentations:
- oral presentations,
- poster presentations, and
- oral presentations at the Student Workshop (see below).
Please follow the guidelines below to submit an abstract.
1. Membership Requirement
a. All presenters must be members of J-SLA at the time of the conference
(presenters at the Student Workshop must be student members); it is not
necessary for co-presenters to be members.
b. Information on joining J-SLA can be found at the following website:
https://en.j-sla.org/membership (Membership Registration)
2. Call for abstracts
Abstracts are invited for oral or poster presentations on any theoretical or
empirical area of research in second language acquisition (SLA). For more
information, refer to “J-SLA Vision Statement” on our website
(https://en.j-sla.org/about).
3. How to submit an abstract:
Submit your abstract by going to the following website:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSejLXqCT4bJY1iKVl6vASlB1hMQ1cpW9PEYBY
qNzS1QKtcJRg/viewform
The site will open for submissions from 1 June 2021 to 15 July 2021.
Please submit the following two files:
(1) A Word file containing your abstract
(2) A PDF containing your abstract
and follow the Abstract submission procedure below (see 9) when creating these
two files. If one of these files is not submitted, the review of your abstract
may be delayed.
4. Deadline for receipt of abstracts: 15 July 2021, 11:59pm (Japan Standard
Time)
5. Confirmation of submission
After submission, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your
submission (a message from google). If you do not, please try again. If you
have trouble with submission, contact the head of the reviewing board Yoko
Nakano at y-k.nakano at kwansei.ac.jp.
6. Notification of acceptance: Around 10 September, 2021.
7. Duration of oral presentations
Oral presentation of papers will be allotted 30 minutes (20 minutes for
presentation, followed by 10 minutes for discussion).
(Presenters are required to submit an mp4 file and other materials for the
presentations by Sunday 10 October 2021.)
8. Language of presentation: Either English or Japanese
9. Abstract submission procedure:
All applicants must follow this procedure to avoid any delay in the review of
their abstracts.
(1) Submissions for oral and poster presentations should be formatted in 10.5
pt Times or Times New Roman in English or 10.5 pt MS Mincho in Japanese. The
sizes of margins should be 3cm from top, bottom, right and left.
(2) The language of the abstract must be the same as the language of the
presentation.
(3) The length of the abstract should not exceed 1,000 words in English or
1,600 characters in Japanese. The title, figures, tables and references are
not counted as part of the word limit. The total length of the abstract
(including the title, figures, tables and references) should not exceed two A4
pages.
(4) Include the title at the top of the abstract.
(5) Do not put name(s) of author(s) on abstracts, as they will be sent out for
blind review. In addition, be sure to anonymize your PDF file by clicking on
''File,'' then ''Properties,'' removing your name if it appears in the
''Author'' line, and resaving before sending it. (The procedure may vary
depending on the version of PDF or computer operating system.)
(6) Include a word count (if written in English) or the number of characters
(if written in Japanese) at the bottom of the abstract.
See the conference site for more detail.
