Description:

The researcher will work in project C08 of the Collaborative Research Center
1287 "Limits of Variability of Language" at the University of Potsdam.

The project investigates which syntactic properties beyond the well-known word
order correlations are associated with the distinction between VO and OV base
order/normal order. To this end, data on approx. 20 grammatical parameters
will be collected for a representative sample of the world's languages. In
addition, further studies are planned on language families whose members have
non-uniform rules with regard to verb-object position. The results will be
interpreted within the framework of current grammar theories. An extensive

Applicants must have a doctorate and a research focus on syntax. Experience in
systematic language comparison, generative syntax, and expertise in one of the
language families that show variable object-verb position between languages
are desirable.

Funding for the position is available until June 30 2025. For m ire
