Level: PhD
Duties: Research
Specialty Areas: Morphology; Phonology; Semantics
Description:
One 4-year PhD position in the project ‘Semantic and Phonological Correlates
of Affix Order’ as part of the DFG Research Unit ‘Cyclic Optimization’
Starting date: October 1, 2021
Salary: Fully Funded Position
Deadline: June 30, 2021
The DFG Research Unit ‘Cyclic Optimization’ starting October 1, 2021 with 15
new research positions will explore the interaction of cyclicity and
optimization in all areas of grammar: phonology, morphology, syntax, and
semantics. The position announced here is part of the subproject ‘Semantic and
Phonological Correlates of Affix Order’, comprising the PI’s Barbara Stiebels
and Jochen Trommer, and an additional Postdoc position. The subproject
investigates the linearization of affixes crosslinguistically, its correlation
to semantic and phonological factors, and its theoretical modeling in
approaches using cyclic optimization. This will happen in close cooperation
with the other subprojects of the Research Unit and also comprise two rotation
projects, where project employees will investigate research questions at the
interfaces of the different subprojects in 2-month internships under the
supervision of other sub-projects.
We actively encourage dissertations of project employees related to the
project topics. An ideal background for dissertation projects is also provided
by the Leipzig linguistic graduate school IGRA and its structured course
program, which welcomes PhD students of the Research Unit.
Check the website of the Research Unit for more information on the overall
project and additional job announcements
(https://www.philol.uni-leipzig.de/en/institute-of-linguistics/research/ru-cyc
lic-optimization/), and

ic-optimization/semantic-and-phonological-correlates-of-affix-orders/ for
details on the affix order project.
Tasks:
- Empirical investigation of typological data on affix order and its
phonological and semantic correlates
- Formal modeling of affix linearization in theoretical phonology, morphology,
and semantics
Qualification:
- Master degree in linguistics or related fields
- Expertise in morphology and in phonology or semantics
- Ability to work with data from unfamiliar languages
- Interest in theoretical analyses
Salary:
The position is fully funded, i.e., comfortably covers your living expenses in
Leipzig, including social security, health insurance, and other benefits. The
specific salary follows the pay scale of the German public service system
(Research Associate position, 65% of the German TVL-13 pay scale).
Please send your application (German or English) including a CV, a statement
of motivation, and two work samples (e.g. MA thesis or term paper) as one pdf
to jtrommer at uni-leipzig.de until June 30, 2021.
Two letters of recommendation should be sent to this address directly from the
referees.
We also encourage multiple applications to different positions of the Research
Unit on Cyclic Optimization.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us at the contact information below if you
have any further questions.
Application Deadline: 30-Jun-2021
