Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz invites
applications for a postdoctoral position in Sociolinguistics, initially funded
for one year (with a potential extension for up to three years). The position
is full-time, remunerated according to the German TV-L pay scale (100% of
E13): https://lbv.landbw.de/-/tabellenentgelt-ab-01-01-2017-neu. The starting
date is negotiable. 

The post-doctoral researcher will contribute to the project studying the
perception of charisma in politics, which involves collaboration of
linguistics with computing science, politics, sociology and political
psychology. The project is headed by Prof. Dr. Tamara Rathcke and funded by
the Excellence Cluster studying “Politics of Inequality”:
https://www.exc.uni-konstanz.de/en/inequality/  The aim is to investigate how
the perception of political charisma is moderated by social, ethnic and
regional attributes of the speaker, potentially creating inequalities in the
distribution of power in politics. The post holder will be involved in
developing innovative, computer-assisted methodologies for the perceptual
testing and run experiments with a wide range of academic and non-academic
audiences. 

Application requirements: 
- A strong PhD in a relevant field (sociophonetics, experimental psychology,
cognitive science, computer science – degree in hand by the agreed starting
date or soon thereafter)
- Excellent academic writing skills and fluency in English (knowledge of
German is beneficial but not required)
- Programming skills in MATLAB/R/Python, expertise in advanced statistical
methods
- Strong background in speech perception research, with experience in online
studies

Responsibilities of the post holder:
- Developing innovative methodologies for perceptual experimentation
- Conducting original research on the perception of political charisma
- Supervising research assistants and collaborating with an interdisciplinary
team of researchers
- Disseminating research results
- Contributing to writing up proposals for external funding
