Description:

The Institute of Linguistics at the University of Minnesota invites
applications from students interested in pursuing a fully-funded Ph.D. program
in Linguistics, starting from Fall 2023 till 2028.

The position would be funded under Diti Bhadra's NSF CAREER grant titled
"Theory, Fieldwork, and Typology: A Semantic/Pragmatic Triad in
Underrepresented Linguistic Systems"
(https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2143740&HistoricalAwards=fal
se).

The ideal student would meet the following criteria:
 - core research area will be semantics and/or pragmatics, most preferably
related to discourse particles (very broadly defined) and discourse
competence;
 - with a strong methodological interest in fieldwork, and a demonstrable
interest in incorporating fieldwork in their thesis work, and some interest in
semantic typology;
 - an empirical focus on South Asian languages.

The student will directly work with Professor Bhadra in her lab (the FITT lab:
https://sites.google.com/view/bhadra-fitt-lab/home?authuser=0), be a big part
of the research trajectory of the lab under her supervision, and will be a
part of a vibrant department in a big research university. The deadline for
applications to our department is December 15th, 2022. The student will join
the department in Fall 2023. Here is more information on How to Apply
(https://cla.umn.edu/linguistics/graduate/how-apply). Even though they will be
funded via the NSF grant, the student will go through the general admission
procedure where all the department faculty meet and approve of the admission.
But in their application materials, the student should emphasize that they are
applying to join the grant and the lab, and demonstrate why they think they
would be a good fit, given the criteria mentioned above. Anyone interested in
applying can contact Professor Bhadra at bhadra at umn.edu if they have any
questions.
