Focus: The workshop targets early career researchers (late PhD students and postdocs) who are interested in forming long-term collaborations and networks across disciplines and continents. The focus is on working in small groups on novel projects and on concrete outputs, such as papers, further workshops, community outreach projects, etc. /

El taller está destinado para jóvenes investigadores (doctorantes en años avanzados y posdoctorantes) quienes tienen interés en formar colaboraciones interdisciplinarias y conexiones intercontinentales a largo plazo. La idea de este taller es trabajar en grupos pequeños sobre proyectos originales para obtener productos concretos, como artículos, secuelas de taller y/o proyectos de retribución comunitaria.

Special Qualifications:
Working languages are Spanish and English. Participants should be fluent in one of these languages and have at least a basic understanding of the other language. /

Description:
This workshop aims at bringing together early career researchers from
linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, ethnohistory, population genetics, and
related disciplines to collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects on
the history of Mesoamerican peoples. We delimit Mesoamerica as the region
covering modern-day (central and southern) Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El
Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and (northern) Costa Rica. This region is home
to diverse cultural groups and language families, many of which can be traced
back to ancient civilizations. Despite this diversity, these groups were and
are in constant contact, which has led to the emergence of shared features
such as architecture, a diet primarily based on corn, beans, and squash, the
use of similar writing and day-counting systems. The same is true for the
languages and language families of Mesoamerica, many of which are highly
diversified but have also been in contact for centuries or millennia. This has
led to family-internal and external settings of language contact and, as a
consequence, shared grammar and lexicon. Mesoamerica thus provides fertile
ground for exploring mechanisms of convergence and divergence in language and
culture over time. /

Este taller tiene como objetivo reunir a los jóvenes investigadores en las
áreas de lingüística, antropología, etnohistoria, genética de poblaciones y
demás disciplinas afines, quienes buscan colaborar en proyectos de
investigación interdisciplinarios sobre la historia de los pueblos
mesoamericanos. Delimitamos Mesoamérica como el área que cubre los actuales
(centro y sur de) México, Belice, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua
y norte de Costa Rica. Esta área abarca pueblos y familias lingüísticas de
diferentes orígenes, muchos de los cuales se pueden remontar hasta las
antiguas civilizaciones. Pese a su diversidad, estos pueblos han estado y
están en contacto constante, lo cual dio origen al surgimiento de rasgos
compartidos en la architectura, en la dieta basada en maíz, frijol y calabaza,
así como el uso compartido del sistema de escritura y la cuenta de días.
Asimismo, las lenguas y familias lingüísticas de Mesoamérica, a pesar de su
diversificación, han estado en contacto por siglos o milenios. Esto propició
situaciones de contacto lingüístico tanto interno como externo a las familias
lingüísticas y, como consecuencia, hizo que compartieran su gramática y
vocabulario. De este modo, Mesoamérica ofrece un terreno fértil para explorar
los mecanismos de convergencia y divergencia en la lengua y cultura a lo largo
del tiempo.
