Introduction
Recently the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) declared the period between 2022-2032 as the International Decade of
Indigenous Languages (IDIL2022-2032). The pronouncement is based on Resolution
A/RES/74/135 of the United Nations General Assembly which focuses of the
critical situation of the indigenous languages and seeks to mobilize resources
and stakeholders globally to preserve, revitalize and promote the use of these
languages. The proclamation will help to mainstream linguistic diversity and
multilingualism aspects into the sustainable development efforts. Aligned to
the IDIL2022-2032 is an idea of modernizing and intellectualizing the
indigenous languages to become languages of research and science.
 One of the approaches in language modernization and promotion is through
translation and technology. As the world’s focus today is on the role and rise
of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), language development efforts will
be highly affected. Technology is expected to facilitate and fast-track
terminology development and other resources that are crucial in modernization
of the indigenous languages. Key contributors such as translation will require
the use of machines and other technologies to achieve the goals of
IDIL2022-2032. 

Aim of the book:
The aim of the book is to put together a collection of chapters based on
original research studies – between 8 and 12 chapters – that explore language
development through translation and the use of technological advancement in
ensuring that these languages are used as languages of science and other
modern activities. The main question is how can technology fast-track the
development of indigenous languages and their promotion? The focus will also
be on the challenges that are encountered through the process of developing
the indigenous languages as well as the achievements so far. The purpose of
the book is therefore to align new research with IDIL2022-2032 with particular
focus on the role of technology in language preservation, revitalization and
promotion. The central argument is that languages must be developed within the
current dispensation of the 4IR to promote their use in various domains, thus
removing global communication barriers in indigenous communities. The scope of
the book covers the development of indigenous languages through translation
and the use of modern technologies. This will contribute to provide knowledge
and strategies through which the indigenous languages should be developed in
the era of 4IR and IDIL2022-2023. The chapters may cover the following themes
among others:

- Language Development Resources
- Technology in Language Development
- Language and Robotics
- Terminology Processes
- Translation Processes
- Machine Translation

Procedure
Please, submit a FULL edited chapter of 6000 - 8000 words in two files, a word
file and a pdf file to ngcobmn at unisa.ac.za by 30 January 2023. The chapter
should be aligned with at least one of the themes of the book as outlined
above. The chapter should also be original and innovative, reader-friendly,
interesting but scholarly in both input and style. The publisher will follow
the process including the double-blind review by two external reviewers,
editing, checking, design and printing of the actual edited volume.

Book proposal: 13 February 2023
Anticipated year of publication: 2024
