Subject: 'Late' Acquisition of Minority Languages
I am currently researching the 'late' (after adolescence) acquisition of
minority languages as a recognized language practice within ethno-linguistic
communities. My focus is only on the late acquisition of the minority language
that is the current L1 of the adults in the community in question - preferably
a non-immigrant community as this is where it is most surprising. Preliminary
research has found sporadic comments in the literature that suggests there are
several variations to this theme -
1) the acquisition of comprehension of a minority language in early childhood
but production of that language only after adolescence
2) the acquisition of both comprehension and production of a minority language
that begins gradually throughout childhood such that fluency is not achieved
until after adolescence.
3) the acquisition of both comprehension and production of a minority
language only after adolescence.
I am looking for citable published data/comments/ethnographic
descriptions/sociolinguistic surveys on either of these 3 patterns in specific
minority language communities.
Thanks for any help on this.
Will gladly post all responses.
