Description:
The Department of linguistics and translation is seeking applications for a
full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate
Professor. The area of specialization is the Innu language, with recognized
expertise in language documentation and revitalization. Candidates with
professional experience or research expertise in Innu-aimun lexicography and
French/Innu-aimun translation are prioritized.
In its action plan “Place aux Premiers Peuples 2020-2023”, the Université de
Montréal recognizes the need to increase the representation of First Nations
members on its campuses. This position is in keeping with the University's
commitment to promote increased representation of First Nations knowledge and
cultures within its various missions.
Responsibilities:
The appointed candidate will be expected to teach Innu language courses
(beginner, intermediate and advanced) at the Language Centre of the Faculté
des arts et des sciences. This person will be expected to participate in the
training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, be active in
research, publishing, and dissemination of knowledge, and contribute to the
academic life of the University. This person will also play an active role in
the development of the ‘Language and society’, ‘Language and technology’, and
‘Lexicography and Terminology’ components of our curricula. The appointed
candidate will also be expected to develop partnerships with Indigenous
communities and establish interdisciplinary collaborations with other
departments and faculties of the Université de Montréal and other
post-secondary institutions in Québec and Canada.
Requirements:
- PhD in linguistics or translation (or equivalent) with a specialization in
Indigenous Studies. Equivalencies such as the role of Indigenous knowledge
keeper, experience in teaching and research in an academic setting, as well as
community engagement will also be taken into consideration;
- Native or near-native competence of the Innu language;
- Teaching experience of Innu-aimun as a first and second language;
- Demonstrated ability to provide high quality university teaching;
- Experience in community-based research and partnership development with
Indigenous communities;
- Experience in fieldwork, documentation and revitalization of Innu-aimun;
- Experience in the development of educational materials and technology
transfer for the revitalization of Indigenous languages;
- An adequate knowledge of the French language (written and spoken) or a
strong commitment to mastering the proficiency level required, in accordance
to Université de Montréal’s Language Policy. An institutional learning support
program is offered to all professors wishing to learn French or improve their
communication skills.

not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.”;
- A curriculum vitae;
- Recent publications or research papers, including websites and materials to
promote Indigenous languages;
- Your teaching philosophy (maximum one page);
- A presentation of your research program (maximum two pages);
- Three letters of recommendation are also to be sent directly to the
department chair by the referees.
