Job Title: Research Associate
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Forensic Linguistics; Phonetics; Sociolinguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is seeking to appoint two
post-doctoral Research Associates (PDRAs) to work with Dr Vincent Hughes
(Principal Investigator), Professor Paul Foulkes and Dr Philip Harrison
(Co-investigators), in collaboration with the UK Ministry of Defence,
Netherlands Forensic Institute and Oxford Wave Research, on their ESRC-funded
project ‘Person-specific automatic speaker recognition: understanding the
behaviour of individuals for applications of ASR’. The project will examine
the types of speakers that are particularly difficult for automatic systems to
recognise, and will attempt to tailor systems towards those individuals. The
aims of the project are to better understand how automatic systems behave, to
improve overall system performance, and to contribute towards making ASR
evidence admissible in UK courts.

We are currently recruiting for two PDRAs, from different disciplines, to work
on the project: one with expertise in linguistics, and one with expertise in
ASR and machine learning.

The linguistics PDRA will initially be required to collect and analyse
controlled recordings of phoneticians under a variety of different,
forensically relevant conditions. These recordings will then be processed
using Oxford Wave Research’s VOCALISE ASR system. You will also conduct
detailed auditory and acoustic phonetic analyses of large-scale corpora
provided by our project partners, as well as selecting and preparing samples
for analysis by a forensic phonetician. You will collaborate with the PI and
CIs on dissemination and impact activities.

The successful applicant will start on 1 June 2022 or as soon as possible
thereafter. The post is full-time and fixed term for 27 months (2.25 years).
