Linguistic Field(s): Linguistic Theories; Morphology
Call Deadline: 30-Apr-2022
Meeting Description:
**Please note that due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this conference has been
postponed one year. The new date is 24 June, 2022**
Convenors: Alexandra Bagasheva (Sofia), Akiko Nagano (Shizuoka), Vincent
Renner (Lyon)
The study of linguistic competition, or rivalry, has recently gained
heightened interest in the word-formation literature (see e.g. Santana-Lario &
Valera, 2017, and Rainer et al., 2019) and elements of a competition-based
morphological theory have appeared in e.g. Mark Aronoff's recent work on
competitive exclusion (see e.g. Aronoff 2016, 2019). This workshop aims to
build on this dynamic and bring together scholars eager to link their latest
findings to theoretical considerations such as the various forms of
competition resolution, their underlying mechanisms and plausible motivations,
as well as a possible lack of resolution (in the long run) and plausible
reasons for that. Important topics include macro-level competition between
different word-formation processes (like the competition between conversion
and affixation or that between blending and compounding) and more systemic
considerations (see e.g. Renner, 2020). Equally welcome are papers adopting a
long diachronic perspective and those following a contrastive approach. This
list of topics and approaches is neither exhaustive, nor restrictive.
