Call for Book Chapters: English Language Contacts and Change in the Digital
Age

PLANNED SERIES
Language and Computers: Studies in Digital Linguistics, Brill
(https://brill.com/view/serial/LC)

EDITORS
Heli Paulasto, Lea Meriläinen, Samuli Kaislaniemi and Mikko Laitinen (all
University of Eastern Finland)

SCOPE AND PURPOSE
Traditional theories and models of English language contacts and change have
been based on the movement of people in geographical space. However, such
traditional views are challenged by the global use of English via various
digital channels. The English language today is an important tool for
international (computer-mediated) communication, and it is being constantly
remolded by its users across different digital media. These communication
tools and media are providing new sites for transnational language contacts
and lingua franca use, which are influencing English itself as well as
adjacent linguistic ecologies. Written English in particular is
colloquializing and diversifying in countless ways, as it is being used as a
communicative and creative resource by native/L1 and nonnative/L2 speakers and
learners on digital platforms. These developments may accelerate broader
trends of language change, but they also create new modes of expressing
identity and belonging.
The aim of the volume is to provide a fresh outlook into how digitalization is
changing our understanding of language contacts, variation and change. For
example:

- What kinds of new spaces for English language contacts are emerging as a
result of digitalization? How are they influencing the outcomes of language
contacts, and how do they potentially challenge earlier views on language
contact and change?
- How are digital media and platforms shaping English language usage intra- or
internationally, and what kinds of effects are they having on language
communities?
- What kinds of linguistic standards or ideologies are emerging as a result of
digital communication? How are digital platforms shaping sociolinguistic or
cultural identities?
- What kinds of opportunities do digital media offer for nonnative/L2 language
users and learners in terms of participation, communication, or learning “in
the wild”?
- How can we examine linguistic variation and change in digital media? What
kinds of methodological opportunities and challenges are there?

The call is open for contributions with a broad range of methods and
approaches in English linguistics (i.a. World Englishes, English as a lingua
franca, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics or dialectology). The
proposed articles should contain empirically based studies. They can deal with
any domain of language, from phonology to discourse and sociolinguistics, and
any type of language use related to digitalization (e.g. language use on
digital platforms, digital texts or text types). All contributions must be
original work which has not been published elsewhere nor is currently under
review for any other publication.
