Meeting Description:
The 16th Nilo-Saharan Linguistics Colloquium is jointly organized by the
Universities of Nairobi and Cologne.
Besides being open for contributions from all fields of specialization in
Nilo-Saharan linguistics, the 2023 Colloquium in particular addresses
researchers, language activists and others contributing to a better
understanding of the diverse social, cultural and epistemological contexts of
Nilo-Saharan languages. Accordingly, the colloquium will include panels,
contributions and debates not only on core areas of linguistic research such
as description (phonetics, phonology, morphology-syntax, semantics, pragmatics
and discourse analysis) and reconstruction, but will also address
interdisciplinary topics such as language acquisition, multilingualism,
language ideologies, translation, media and communication, the construction of
time and space, expressions of experiences of violence, Indigenous and
postcolonial knowledges, ecology and language, concepts of language and
storytelling as intangible heritage, expressions of emotional experience, the
relation between culture and semantic domains.
With the inclusion of topics that are relatively new to the Nilo-Saharan
Linguistics Colloquium, we want to give more space to research that helps to
understand language practices in their sociocultural contexts and acknowledge
the manifold important contributions of Indigenous experts and community-based
research groups.
The colloquium will take place at the University of Nairobi from 29th August
to 1st September, 2023. The conference is being organised by Prisca Jerono,
Jane Oduor, and Helga Schröder (Nairobi), and Angelika Mietzner, Alice
Mitchell, and Anne Storch (Cologne).
