Language Description

Description:

The thesis will be conducted within an interlinguistic project entitled SALTA
- Spatial Asymmetries Across Languages (ANR project - Agence Nationale de
Recherche) coordinated by Benjamin Fagard (Lattice, Paris), Christine Lamarre
(CRLAO, Paris), Anetta Kopecka (DDL, Lyon) and Alice Vittrant (DDL, Lyon). The
SALTA project brings together c. 25 researchers and focuses on languages that
vary from typological, areal and genealogical perspectives (see the project
website).

The PhD candidate should be trained in general linguistics ((morphology,
syntax and semantics) and in language description and typology, and be
familiar with the typological literature on space, motion and/or deixis. The
candidate is expected to work on an undescribed language (language of the
candidate's choice) in order to:
 - provide a grammatical sketch of the language (PART 1 of the dissertation);
 - conduct a study of the morphosyntactic and semantic systems used in this
language to express spatial events; and investigate spatial (a)symmetries in
this domain of expression (cf. Kopecka & Vuillermet, 2021) (PART 2 of the
dissertation).

To complete the dissertation, the successful doctoral student will conduct
fieldwork to collect first-hand data, using various methods in order to
collect spontaneous data (narration and/or conversation) and elicited data
(descriptions of visual stimuli).

The successful candidate will be enrolled at the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and
will be affiliated with the Dynamique du Langage research laboratory (UMR
5596) as a member of the DiLiS (Diversité Linguistique et ses Sources)
research axis. S/he will be based in the Lyon region, with a workplace at the
DDL laboratory (14, avenue Berthelot, 69363 Lyon CEDEX 07).

The thesis will involve fieldwork on the language of the study and will
require field trips in the language community to collect linguistic data and
build a corpus of spontaneous and elicited data.

The successful candidate is also expected to actively participate in SALTA
meetings, in research seminars and other scientific activities at the DDL
laboratory, as well as in national and/or international conferences. In
addition to participating in research activities in the laboratory, the
candidate will also follow methodological training provided by the doctoral
school.
