Institution/Organization: Karlstad University
Department: Department of Language, Literature and Intercultural Studies, English
Web Address: https://www.kau.se/en/english/
Level: PhD
Duties: Research
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics
Multilingualism
Required Language(s): English (eng)
Description:
Karlstad University invites applications for a doctoral studentship in English
linguistics at the Department of Language, Literature and Intercultural
Studies. The doctoral thesis project is to be carried out in a field of
English linguistics that connects to ongoing research in English linguistics
at Karlstad University. For more information, see
https://www.kau.se/en/english/research/english-linguistics
Eligibility:
To be eligible for doctoral studies the applicant must meet the general and
specific entry requirements and be deemed to have the ability otherwise
required to pursue the program successfully (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap.
7, Sect. 35).
To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have second-cycle
(Master’s level) qualifications and have completed at least 240 higher
education credits of which at least 60 credits are studies at Master’s level,
or they must have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way in
Sweden or abroad (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 39).
To meet the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in English
linguistics, the applicant must have completed at least 30 higher education
credits in English at Master’s level, including an independent degree project
(Master’s thesis) of at least 15 higher education credits. The Master’s level
degree project may be related to other fields than English linguistics, but
normally it is easier for an applicant to demonstrate suitability if their
Master degree project was also in English linguistics. A person who has
acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad is also eligible.
Assessment Criteria:
Applicants are assessed and ranked on the basis of their research proposal,
their previous studies and research experience, with special emphasis on the
quality of their submitted independent research-related works, especially at
Master’s level, and their command of English in speech and writing. The
successful candidate is expected to be based in Karlstad and to be actively
involved in the daily activities of the department.
Terms:
Upon admission to doctoral studies, a studentship position will be offered
(Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 5, sect. 3). The position comprises four
years of full-time studies, or five years of 80% studies and 20% teaching or
other departmental duties. The position is fixed-term (one year initially,
followed by a possible extension with a maximum of two years at a time). Start
date is by agreement. The salary for the doctoral studentship corresponds to
the standard level of salary for doctoral students at Karlstad University.
Application:
Submit the application via the University’s web-based recruitment tool, Varbi,
at the application link below. The application should include:
- a cover letter where the applicant details why the position is of interest
and describes their attitude to pursuing doctoral studies,
- a curriculum vitae (CV), including the names of two referees,
- degree certificates with a complete transcript of the courses included, or
a certified list of completed courses with grades and dates,
- a copy of the Master’s thesis (or equivalent), and any other research
papers, such as scholarly articles or book chapters, demonstrating the
applicant’s ability to successfully complete a doctoral program, and
- a research proposal (max. 1,000 words) with an account of how the proposed
project relates to ongoing research in English linguistics at Karlstad
University.
Attach all the documents and publications you wish to be considered to the
electronic application (do not merely provide links). Name each uploaded
document to clearly indicate its content.
Documents that cannot be submitted electronically should be sent to the
following address:
