Meeting Description:
The 10th International Symposium on the Acquisition of Second Language Speech
(New Sounds
2022) will take place on 20-22 April 2022 at the University of Barcelona,
Spain. New Sounds gathers
researchers from all over the world to discuss issues related to the learning
and teaching of
second/foreign language (L2) phonetics and phonology.
The conference will cover a variety of topics:
- Speech perception and production
- Theories and models of L2 speech learning
- Phonetics and phonology in second language acquisition
- Acquisition of L2 phonology and phonotactics
- Multilingualism and the acquisition of additional languages
- Application of new technologies to pronunciation teaching and learning
- Sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and neurolinguistic aspects of L2 speech
learning
Keynote speakers:
- Ocke-Schwen Bohn (University of Aarhus, Denmark)
- Pilar Prieto (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona)
- Annie Tremblay (University of Kansas, U.S.)
In principle, we are planning for a regular in-person conference, but if the
pandemic situation requires it, an on-line or a hybrid format (in-person and
virtual) alternative may be adopted.

Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the (provisional) program for the 10th
International Symposium on the Acquisition of Second Language Speech (New
Sounds), which will take place in Barcelona on 20-22 April 2022, is available
on the conference website (https://www.ub.edu/newsounds2022/ > Program). Note,
this program is provisional. Check the website for updates.
New Sounds is a conference for researchers and teachers interested in issues
related to phonetics and phonology in second/foreign languages (L2). The
conference will cover a variety of topics related to L2 speech.
The keynote speakers will be:
- Ocke-Schwen Bohn (University of Aarhus, Denmark)
- Pilar Prieto (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona)
- Annie Tremblay (University of Kansas, U.S.)
There will also be a featured presentation by James E. Flege (University of
Alabama at Birmingham, U.S.).
