22nd Biennial Conference on Balkan and South Slavic Linguistics, Literature, and Folklore

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Morphology; Phonology; Syntax
Meeting Description:
The 22nd biennial conference on Balkan and South Slavic Linguistics,
Literature and Folklore will be held at The Ohio State University in Columbus,
OH on Thursday April 7 – Sunday April 10, 2022. This conference focuses on the
linguistics, literature, and folklore of the languages of the Balkans.
Our current plan is to hold the conference as an in-person event, though we
recognize that there are possible problems, even in these days of greater
openness, associated with an in-person event, especially issues for everyone
with regard to access to travel funding and for those coming from abroad with
regard to visas and potential travel restrictions. The Organizing Committee
will periodically assess the situation and may ultimately opt for an
all-virtual or a hybrid-style conference depending on local and global
circumstances; most importantly, we will keep participants informed as to the
modality to be employed for the conference.
Program:
The program for the 22nd Biennial Conference on Balkan and South Slavic
Linguistics, Literature, and Folklore is now available on the conference
website: https://u.osu.edu/bssc/conference-program/. The event is open to the
public. Registration is open until April 4th through the website. There is no
registration fee.
The program features 40 regular presentations and two invited talks:
Keynote Talk (Thur April 7, 14.00, EDT/UTC-4): Victor Friedman (University of
Chicago), ''Balkan Obscenity and the Balkan Sprachbund”
2022 Kenneth E. Naylor Memorial Lecture (Fri April 8, 11.00, EDT/UTC-4):
Andrey Sobolev (Marburg University), ''Torlak in the Slavic Family and Balkan
Sprachbund: Linguistic Problems and Methodological Challenges''
Accommodation Statement: If you require accommodations such as sign language
interpretation or live captioning, please contact the BSSC22 Organizing
Committee at balkanconference2022 at gmail.com as soon as possible. In general,
requests made two weeks before the event will allow us to provide access, and
requests further in advance are appreciated, but the university will make
every effort to meet requests made after this date.
