Description:
The Division of Southeast Asian languages in the Department of Asian
languages, Faculty of Foreign languages, at Kanda University of International
Studies (KUIS: http://www.kandagaigo.ac.jp/kuis/english/) seeks to appoint a
lecturer of Thai as a foreign language (non-tenure track) for the 2023-2024
academic year (first semester: April-August, second semester:
September-January).
Duties include teaching undergraduate courses (eight 1.5-hour classes) and
involvement in other educational activities (three 1.5-hour units) five days
per week. Working hours are from 9:00 to17:00 or from 10:30 to 18:30.
The appointment is initially for two years (from April 1, 2023, through March
30, 2024) with a possibility of renewal for two additional years.
The appointee will have primary responsibility for teaching classes of Basic
Thai, Applied Thai and Advanced Thai as well as advising students with their
homework tasks, managing conversation practice, coaching students in their
performances for the annual speech contest, etc. Each semester, the appointee
will be responsible for conducting cultural event(s) at the university’s
Multilingual Communication Center (MULC) in collaboration with MULC staff,
other Thai teachers, exchange students from Thailand, and students with double
majors in Thai and English. If the need arises, the appointee will take part
in proctoring the university entrance examination.
Minimum requirements:
- M.A. in Linguistics, Thai language studies, Teaching Thai to non-native
Thai speakers, or a closely related field (at the time of appointment).
- an academic publication such as a research paper or a book
- native Thai speaker
- ability to teach in person at KUIS during the academic year
Preferred qualifications:
- experience in teaching Thai to non-native Thai speakers at the higher
educational level
- willingness to engage in educational duties and activities in accordance
with KUIS’s future vision and founding philosophy (“Languages are the
foundation to link the world in peace”)
- desire to involve oneself in the education and actively participate in
events at KUIS.

- a copy of an academic transcript of grades in graduate school (M.A., Ph.D.)
- a one- or two-page statement of your ambitions in teaching Thai at KUIS
