Subject: Error Tagging Manual
The error tagging system developed by the Centre for English Corpus
Linguistics (CECL) in the 1990s has since been used by numerous researchers
internationally to annotate errors in learner corpora. With a view to ensuring
ease of use and maximum intra- and inter-rater reliability, we considered it
essential from the outset to provide a detailed description of the error
tagging principles and error categories, illustrated with numerous authentic
examples of learner errors. To this end the first version of a detailed error
tagging manual was developed in 1996 and updated in 2005 and 2008.
We are very pleased to announce that a revised and fully revamped version of
the manual has been developed by Helen Swallow, Jennifer Thewissen and myself
and can be downloaded free of charge from the CECL website:
https://uclouvain.be/en/research-institutes/ilc/cecl/cecl-papers.html. Every
effort has been made to give full and clear explanations of the tags and their
application, with potential areas of difficulty or confusion highlighted in
‘Warning’ messages.
Alongside the original error tagging manual, an error editor (UCLEE:
Université Catholique de Louvain Error Editor) was designed to help
researchers insert error tags and corrections into corpus files. This
software has become steadily more outdated over the years, leading us to cease
distribution a while ago. A brand new version of the program has now been
developed and will be made freely available under a Creative Commons licence
in the autumn.
We are confident that these two resources will be very useful to the many
researchers engaged in assessing the accuracy of learners’ productions and
designing tailor-made teaching materials.
