Call for Papers:

HEL-LEX 7: FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
Jamaica
7-8 June 2023
Theme: “Contact and English Lexis and Dictionaries”

We invite abstracts for papers that deal with how contact has changed the
lexis of varieties of English around the globe, and how the opportunities and
challenges presented by contact impact the lexicography of English. Contact
should be understood broadly as applying to the contact between English and
other languages, between different dialects and registers of English, between
English and English-related Pidgins and Creoles, as well as
contact/interaction between different dictionaries and ‘doculects’. Scholars
should still feel free to submit abstracts on any topic related to the history
of English lexicography, historical semantics and lexicology.

The following two scholars will deliver plenary lectures at the symposium.

Dr. Jeannette Allsopp, former Director of the Centre for Caribbean
Lexicography, a significant contributor to the Dictionary of Caribbean English
Usage, and editor of several specialised dictionaries.

Prof. Stefan Dollinger, Professor of English Language and Literatures at the
University of British Columbia, and Chief Editor of the second edition of the
Dictionary of Canadianisms on Historical Principles.

A collection of selected papers from the symposium will be published. Please
note that a call for submissions will allow only about four months after the
Symposium to revise and complete papers for publication.

The programme committee invites submissions of one-page abstracts that should
be emailed as an attachment (docx, rtf, or PDF formats) to hellex77 at gmail.com
by Thursday, 5 January 2023. The abstract should not bear your name or
affiliation and should be sent as an attachment to an email message in which
you have the title of your paper, your full name, title, professional
affiliation, address, phone number, and preferred email address.

All abstracts will be subject to peer review and notification of acceptance
will be provided by Tuesday, 31 January 2023.

Information on registration, local arrangements and conference fees will soon
be available at https://blogs.helsinki.fi/hellex-society.
