UCSB LINGUISTICS SNEAK PEEK GRADUATE RECRUITMENT EVENT TOWARD A DIVERSE AND
INCLUSIVE LINGUISTICS

On November 3, 2022, the Department of Linguistics at UC Santa Barbara will
offer a virtual Sneak Peek workshop to support excellent graduate applicants
from underrepresented communities as they prepare for the application deadline
of November 21st.

The University of California recognizes the variety of personal experiences,
values and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance.
Such diversity in the UC student body is integral to the University's
achievement of excellence. Santa Barbara Sneak Peek is aimed at graduate
students who bring an understanding of the experiences of groups historically
underrepresented in higher education, including but not limited to those who
have been minoritized on the basis of race/ethnicity, gender
identity/expression, disability, and/or socioeconomic background. We encourage
participation from individuals who meet the eligibility criteria for admission
and represent cultural, linguistic, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
not adequately represented in the graduate student population.

Participants in Santa Barbara Sneak Peek will learn about the UCSB Linguistics
graduate program, how to create a strong application for a graduate program in
linguistics, and learn more about department members and academic and research
opportunities currently happening in our department.

If you are planning to apply to UCSB and meet the criteria discussed above,
please register to receive a Zoom link for the event on November 3.
Registration is open until full; advance registration by Wednesday, Nov. 2 is
preferred.

Schedule of Events (All events take place Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022; all times
are in the Pacific time zone)

2:30-3:15pm: Workshop on Application Process & Materials

Hosted by Prof. Lal Zimman, Director of Graduate Studies
This workshop will cover how to prepare your application materials for
graduate programs in linguistics and the structure and admissions process for
the linguistics MA/PhD programs at UCSB. It will focus on the needs and
questions of applicants from underrepresented communities, including students
of color, first generation students, students with disabilities, LGBTQIA+
students, and others marginalized within academia.

3:30-4:15pm: Faculty panel

Hosted by Prof. Mary Bucholtz, Acting Director of Equity, Inclusion,
Diversity, and Justice
Department faculty speak about their current research, teaching, lab groups
and collaborations, community work, and other projects. Attendees will also
have the opportunity to ask questions of individual faculty members. General
questions about the graduate program should be directed to the Director of
Graduate Studies, Lal Zimman, or brought to the earlier workshop.

4:15-5:00pm: Graduate student panel

A panel of current UCSB graduate students with a range of research interests
and lived experiences speak about life in the Department of Linguistics, at
UCSB, and in Santa Barbara. This is a candid and confidential discussion--no
faculty will be in attendance!
