The International Mother Language Institute (IMLI) (only UNESCO category-2
institution in Bangladesh), Dhaka, under the Ministry of Education, People’s
Republic of Bangladesh is dedicated to documenting, preserving, and developing
the mother languages of the world, especially those that are going to be
disappeared. As a part of this process, IMLI is planning to implement an
action plan to publish an encyclopedia Mother Language Pedia. This will
provide readers with an encyclopedic knowledge of the mother languages of the
world. In producing the encyclopedia, the main objectives are to provide an
overview of the mother languages used by language communities throughout the
world, to interpret the theoretical frameworks and methods associated with
mother language documentation, research, and preservation, to acquire
knowledge of the linguistic ecology of the world, including Bangladesh; and to
improve linguistic knowledge in an academic setting. Ten volumes of the
linguistic encyclopedia with selected entries will be published both in Bangla
and English versions (five volumes in each language).
Entries: Topics of the mother languages of the world include theories,
methods, daily living activities, artifacts, historical facts, cultural
components, dialects, linguistic evidentiality, description of a language
(e.g., origin, development, language family, basic structures, speakers,
scripts (if any), literature, etc. Furthermore, teaching, administration,
planning, and other related aspects will be included in this encyclopedia. The
number of words allowed for each entry will be limited to 500-1000.
Eligibility for contributors: As contributors, we are looking for linguists,
researchers, and educators working in educational institutions that specialize
in languages of ethnic minorities, areal languages, linguistic theories and
methods, language education, L2, and foreign language teaching and learning.
Special Attention
If you are a dedicated researcher who is voluntarily collecting, documenting,
and preserving less explored mother languages in different parts of the world
for a long time, teaching these to the given communities, or even developing
basic grammar, writing systems, terminologies of these languages, you are
requested to submit a short description of mother language which does not
exceed 1000 words. In this description, you include the following components
but are not limited to: geographical location, number of speakers, the name of
the language family it belongs to, basic grammatical constituents, and writing
system or script, literary contribution, examples of daily usages, name of
journals or periodicals published in these languages regularly or
occasionally, (if any), etc. Finally, please do not forget to mention your
affiliation in this short description.
These short descriptions of mother languages that you will send to us will
highly be considered to include in this upcoming Mother Language Pedia.
