Description:

The department of Linguistics at Boston University (BU) seeks to build a
diverse and motivated incoming class for its PhD program, starting Fall 2023.
We are able to make up to five offers to qualified candidates whose research
interests lie within the scope of our faculty's expertise. Possible areas of
focus include syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics/phonology, language
documentation, sociolinguistics, and computational linguistics.

All PhD students at BU are fully funded for five years, which means tuition is
covered by the university. Students also receive a stipend (conditional on
working as a Teaching Fellow or Research Assistant in some semesters) to live
on. Read about the funding available here:
http://www.bu.edu/cas/current-students/phd-mfa-students/financial-aid/aid-for-
phd-students/. In addition to the semesterly funding detailed at this link,
PhD students in the Linguistics Department receive an additional $5000 as a
summer stipend each year.

Application Deadline: January 6, 2023

How to apply:
The needed components of an application can be found here (scroll down to
"Linguistics"): https://www.bu.edu/cas/admissions/phd-mfa/apply/

On top of the requirements we impose as a program, the university imposes
TOEFL requirements for all applicants, which you can read about here:
https://www.bu.edu/cas/admissions/ma-ms/apply/frequently-asked-questions/testi
ng-requirements/. The Linguistics Department at Boston University does not
require applicants to have taken the GRE.

BU uses an online system for the submission of all applications, and all
materials must be submitted through that system:
