Workshop proposal
The workshop aims to discuss various aspects of the relation between
onomatopoeias and sound symbolism. It will focus on the following main
thematic areas:
(i) The role and the significance of sound symbolism in onomatopoeia.
Cross-linguistic comparisons are most welcome.
(ii) Sound symbolism in onomatopoeia at the level of phonesthemes and at the
level of generalized sound types (plosives, fricatives,...).
(iii) Universal and language-specific manifestations of sound symbolism in
onomatopoeia.
(iv) The compatibility of sound symbolism and the semantic relations of
synonymy, polysemy, and homonymy in onomatopoeia.
(v) An onomasiological (sound symbolism from the perspective of conceptual
categories) and a semasiological (the meaning represented by individual
phonesthemes and generalized types of sounds) approaches to the examination of
sound symbolism in onomatopoeia.
