Building on a tradition established by Joel Rini (and later Don Tuten) over
the last 20 years, the organizers of this year’s sessions invite presentations
on history and change in Spanish and related language varieties, including
work from any of the following areas:
- Historical linguistics
- Language Change
- Language Contact
- Linguistic analysis of historical texts
- Historical sociolinguistics and pragmatics
- Glottopolitics
- Language Policy & Planning
We aim to provide a collaborative environment where both established and
beginning scholars, including graduate students, may share completed work or
well-articulated work that is in-progress and exploratory.
New to the 2023 edition is that the Hispanic Linguistics: History and Change
sessions are hosting a keynote speaker. This year's speaker is Dr. María Jesús
Torrens Álvarez (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Spain).
Presentations will usually be delivered in Spanish and/or English and will be
limited to 20 minutes. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A period of
10 minutes. To encourage maximum exchange of ideas and feedback, presentations
will be grouped into thematic panels.
As in the 2022 edition, this year's presentations on Thursday (April 20th)
will be held virtually, while presentations on Friday and Saturday (April
21st-22nd) will be held in person. Presenters will be asked upon their
abstract submission about their preference regarding the delivery format of
their presentation.
Individual abstracts should be no more than 250 words. All abstracts must
include the heading “Hispanic Linguistics: History and Change”.
Abstracts are submitted through the KFLC website (https://kflc.as.uky.edu/):
1) create an account and log in.
2) follow the menu path: Call for Papers > Submit an Abstract.
3) read carefully and follow the general KFLC abstract submission guidelines
and instructions.
4) we are only accepting individual submissions, so the KFLC instructions
regarding pre-organized panels do not apply. Anyone wishing to propose a panel
of presenters should contact the organizers (see below).
5) select the “Hispanic Linguistics: History and Change” track and indicate
clearly at the very top of your abstract: “Hispanic Linguistics: History and
Change”.
The KFLC has a tradition of attracting scholars from a broad range of
languages and specializations. This year’s conference will have sessions in
Arabic and Islamic Studies, Classical Studies, East Asian Studies, French and
Francophone Studies, German-Austrian-Swiss Studies, Hispanic Linguistics,
Hispanic Linguistics: History and Change, Hispanic Studies (Spanish Peninsular
and Spanish American), Indigenous and Endangered Languages, Intercultural
Studies, Italian Studies, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Language Studies for the
Professions, Linguistics, Lusophone Studies, Music Studies in Language and/or
Cultures, Neo-Latin Studies, Russian and Slavic Studies, Second Language
Acquisition, and Translation Studies.
