University or Organization: Yale University
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Connecticut, USA
Web Address: https://ling.yale.edu/
Job Title: Lector/Senior Lector I, Native American Languages
Job Rank: Lector/Senior Lector I; Other
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics
Description:
The Linguistics Department at Yale University invites applications for a
full-time, non-tenure-track position teaching a language Indigenous to the
Americas at the rank of Lector or Senior Lector I. The initial three-year
appointment will start July 1, 2023, and is renewable.
Full-time lectors at Yale are responsible for the equivalent of 6 courses on
campus per academic year, often realized through teaching 5 term courses and
providing 1 course equivalent of administrative, pedagogical, or other service
in support of the academic priorities of the University. Yale language classes
meet 5 days per week. We are looking for a candidate who is able to offer a
sequence of classes from introductory to advanced level, which would fulfill
the language requirement in Yale College.
Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications. If the
initial appointment is at the rank of Lector, a promotion review for Senior
Lector I must take place in the fifth year or earlier. Senior lectors at Yale
are expected to participate in teaching-related professional activities (e.g.,
workshops, seminars, training activities, conferences) and have no limits on
reappointment, provided there is successful performance and ongoing curricular
need.
Lectors are eligible for Yale’s generous package of benefits, including health
coverage, and they are encouraged to participate in the wide range of
professional development opportunities offered through the Center for Language
Study, the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty of Arts
and Sciences Dean’s Office.
Qualifications:
Applicants will have at least a BA in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics,
Indigenous Studies, or a related field. Applicants should have fluency or near
fluency in the language of instruction; teaching experience, ideally at the
College level; and training in second language methodology/pedagogy.
Candidates whose work includes linguistics or language reclamation are
particularly encouraged to apply. We especially welcome applications from
Native American, Alaska Native, First Nations, and Native Hawaiian applicants.
Application Instructions:
Applicants should submit an application via the link below. The application
should include:
- a letter of application,
- a current CV,
- a statement laying out the applicant's teaching philosophy and experience,
- evidence regarding teaching effectiveness (e.g., course evaluations or
supervisor reviews),
- a sample syllabus (or other relevant teaching materials),
- three letters of recommendation.
Review of applications will begin October 31, 2022 and will continue until the
position is filled. For questions regarding this position, please email Claire
Bowern (see email below).
Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:
Yale University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer. Yale
values diversity among its students, staff, and faculty and strongly welcomes
applications from women, persons with disabilities, protected veterans, and
underrepresented minorities.
