Description:
Top quality research requires outstanding methodological skills. That
is why the Department of Linguistics and the Department of
Translation, Interpreting and Communication of Ghent University will
jointly organize a Summer School on “Methods in Language Sciences” in
July 2023.

This Summer School is targeted at both junior and senior researchers
and offers ten multi-day modules on various topics, ranging from
quantitative to qualitative methods and covering introductory and
advanced statistical analysis (including a separate module on Linear
Mixed Models), Natural Language Processing (NLP), eye-tracking, survey
design, as well as specific tools such as PRAAT and ELAN. In 2023 we
have two new modules: one on multivariate statistical methods and one
on research data management. All lecturers are internationally
recognized experts with a strong research and teaching background.

Because the modules will partly be held in parallel sessions,
participants have to choose one or two modules to follow (see the
Programme for details). No prerequisite knowledge or experience is
required, except for Modules 2, 9 and 10, which deal with advanced
statistical data analysis.

We are proud to welcome keynote speaker Thomas Demeester (UGent-imec)
at this year’s summer school, who will give a talk about what is
inside ChatGPT.

Due to the energy crisis in 2022 the registration fees were updated to
€300 for one module and €400 for two modules. This will ensure that we
can continue to offer a high quality summer school at still reasonable
prices. Participants of Ghent University are exempt from the fees
since their registration is sponsored by the Doctoral Schools.

This is your opportunity to take your methodological skills for
research in (applied) linguistics, translation or interpreting studies
to the next level. We are looking forward to meeting you in Ghent!

Tuition: 300.0 EURO
Tuition Explanation: 300 euros for one module (15 contact hours)
400 euros for two modules (30 contact hours)
Tuition also includes two coffee breaks per day and lunches

Registration: 17-Apr-2023 to 30-Jun-2023
