Meeting Description:
The purpose of this workshop, organised within the project
"Contrasting contexts of language contact in synchrony and diachrony",
is to compare written language contact (or literacy contact, i.e.,
contact via translations, especially related to ancient languages) to
direct language contact, focusing on grammatical change. While direct
language contact has been considered an important source for language
change (including grammatical change), written language contact, via
translations, has not been generally taken into consideration in
previous research in historical linguistics (for various different
reasons).
Invited Speaker: Nikolaos Lavidas, National and Kapodistrian
University of Athens
Call for Papers:
The following issues should be considered when submitting an abstract:
- the grammatical structures which can be influenced by written
language contact
- grammatical changes in successive translations of the same text
- similar grammatical effects of direct contact and written contact,
etc.
Presentation proposals may refer to any (ancient) language in contact
with another language or other languages.
The duration of a presentation: 20 minutes (+ 10 minutes for
discussion).
