Meeting Description:
We are pleased to announce that the 10th Biennial International
Conference on the Linguistics of Contemporary English (BICLCE) will be
held from 26 to 28 September 2024 at the University of Alicante.
For nearly 20 years, BICLCE conference has been a forum for
researchers who are interested in the linguistics of contemporary
English. It is open to different theoretical and methodological
perspectives.
2nd Call for Papers:
Thematic workshop on "Language Attitudes and World Englishes: Methods,
Insights, and Challenges"
Organizer(s): Giuliana Regnoli (University of Pisa and University of
Regensburg, giuliana.regnoli at unipi.it);
Mirjam Schmalz (independent researcher, mirjam.schmalz at bluewin.ch)
Important dates: December 15, 2023 Deadline abstract submission
September 26-28, 2024 Conference dates
Keywords: folk linguistics; language attitudes; variationist
sociolinguistics; World Englishes
The workshop aims at bridging the gap between World Englishes and the
field of language attitudes. In doing so, it sets out to address the
following research questions:
1. How can language attitude research contribute to and expand our
understanding of sociolinguistic variation in World Englishes
contexts?
2. In what way can research on lesser-known varieties contribute to
the understanding of World Englishes in general?
3. Which further insights can lesser-used methodological approaches
offer to attitude studies in World Englishes?
4. How can applied contexts be informed by language attitudes?
This workshop aims to bring together scholars engaging in language
attitude research within a World English paradigm, but we also
encourage researchers working on these varieties in diasporic
communities as well as in Expanding-circle contexts to contribute. The
range of topics may include, but is not limited to:
• language attitudes
• folk linguistics
• speech production and perception
• sociolinguistic variation
• indexicality and metalinguistic awareness
• research on online and offline contexts
• mixed methods approaches
• attitudinal research in applied contexts
In line with the general conference pattern, papers will be allotted
20 minutes for presentation followed by a 10-minute discussion. The
workshop will be rounded off by a general discussion. We plan the
publication of an edited volume or journal special issue following the
successful completion of the workshop.
Abstract submissions of no more than 500 words (excluding references;
please use the Chicago Manual of Style) should be sent by email to
giuliana.regnoli at unipi.it and mirjam.schmalz at bluewin.ch by December
15, 2023.
