University or Organization: Pennsylvania State University
Job Location: Pennsylvania, USA
Job Title: Researcher in English for Specific Purposes & English as a
Medium of Instruction
Job Rank: Researcher
Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics
Description:
The Department of Applied Linguistics and the English for Professional
Purposes Intercultural Center (EPPIC) at The Pennsylvania State
University are seeking applications for a Researcher in English for
Specific Purposes (ESP) and English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI).
This is a non-tenure-track position to be filled at the rank of
Assistant Research Professor.
EPPIC (https://eppic.la.psu.edu/) is a research and academic support
center in Applied Linguistics that works with multilingual students,
scholars, and faculty on advanced genres of academic and professional
English, and promotes multilingual awareness and inclusive
communication across Penn State’s global community.
The primary purpose of this position is to work with the Director of
EPPIC to design and implement research-based professional development
programs to support faculty who teach in EMI contexts abroad. These
programs involve collaboration with international partner
universities, primarily in Taiwan.
In addition, the appointee will collaborate with the Director to
conduct research on faculty development in EMI through the lens of
Vygotskyan Sociocultural Theory (VSCT) and to develop ESP/EMI
curricular materials that align with this research. This is a
full-time, term appointment, for one year from date of hire with a
possibility of renewal. The anticipated start date for this position
is as soon as possible.
The appointee will contribute to Applied Linguistics and EPPIC through
the following key responsibilities:
- Contributing to research projects in EPPIC, particularly related to
faculty development in EMI
- Designing and implementing research-based professional development
services for EMI faculty abroad, both online and onsite
- Managing outreach efforts and communication related to EMI faculty
programming with partner universities and programs
- Providing workshops, individual coaching, and teaching portfolio
support to EMI faculty and support specialists
- Collaborating on the design and coordination of an International
Faculty Development Retreat to be hosted by EPPIC at Penn State’s
University Park campus in 2024
- Designing curricular materials in EMI and ESP
- Providing ESP consultations to multilingual students, scholars, and
faculty
- Attending and participating in academic conferences to present
research findings
Education and Experience: The appointee must have a doctoral degree in
applied linguistics, education, or a related field, and at least three
years of prior experience in ESP curriculum design and EMI teacher
preparation. The successful candidate must have completed all degree
requirements by the appointment date. Knowledge of Mandarin Chinese
and Vygotskyan approaches to education is desirable, but not required.
Applicants who apply on or before September 18, 2023, and submit all
requested materials by that date, will receive full consideration for
the position.
