The EU Speak Board is pleased to announce a six-week professional
development module for those who work with immigrant adults:
Reading in a *LESLLA Context
Wednesday 24 January to Sunday 10 March 2024
Registration opens 15 January 2024
This online module treats reading from a psycholinguistic perspective.
The approach is theoretical in exploring the cognitive and linguistic
aspects of learning to read. In addition, there are opportunities to
explore innovative ways to teach word decoding and reading
comprehension.
Hosted on a Moodle platform, the module is offered in English,
Finnish, German, Spanish, and Turkish. It revolves around an
international discussion forum in which seasoned practitioners,
alongside those new to LESLLA, exchange ideas and support each other.
The module features five expert-led interactive webinars:
1) Phonological awareness in an unfamiliar language
2) The online heritage language resources hub for pleasure reading
3) Introducing the Digital Literacy Instructor, in Dutch
4) Writing short fiction books for emergent adult readers
5) Free voluntary reading, led by Stephen Krashen
For questions, and to sign up for the latest updates for this and
other modules when offered, contact info.euspeak at gmail.com.
A $55.00 enrollment fee covers all administrative and technical
support. There is no charge for a personalized Certificate of
Completion, which acknowledges 30 hours of professional development.
There is also no charge for continued access to the module and module
mentors until the end of March 2024.
*LESLLA (Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults,
www.leslla.org) is an international organization dedicated to the
research and practice relevant to adult immigrants who are emergent
readers with limited or interrupted formal education.
