Description:
The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive
university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the
west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) invites
applications for the position of Full or Associate Professor of English
Linguistics, preferably specializing in one of the following fields:
- sociolinguistics;
- bilingualism/multilingualism; and/or
- semantics and pragmatics.
The Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational,
scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English
Studies, focusing on linguistics and literary studies, as well as elective
courses in translation studies. At the postgraduate level, the Department
offers an MA in English Studies and an MA in Translation Studies. There are
two PhD areas, in (i) English Literary Studies and (ii) English Linguistics.
FAH is home to the Centre for Studies in Translation, Interpreting and
Cognition and Centre for Linguistics. The Department also contributes courses
to the General Education programme.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have a PhD in Linguistics or related areas,
teaching experience at the tertiary level, and a record of research
accomplishment appropriate to the rank of Full or Associate Professor.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching, an
outstanding publication record, a willingness to provide service to the
University, and an interest in English in the Asian context. Candidates with
quality research publications and teaching experience in varieties of English,
sociolinguistics, bilingualism and multilingualism, and/or
semantics/pragmatics will be particularly welcome.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2023.
Remuneration:
A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,019,200 (approximately
USD125,830) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic
qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum
income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various
discretionary exemptions. Apart from competitive remuneration, UM offers a
wide range of benefits, such as medical insurance, provident fund, on-campus
