Job Title: Visiting Assistant Professor of Linguistics
Job Rank: Visiting Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Phonology; Sociolinguistics; Experimental Linguistics

Description:

The Linguistics Department at Carleton College seeks to hire a specialist in
theoretical phonology for a one-year, full-time position as a Visiting
Assistant Professor for the 2023-24 academic year. We will consider candidates
who specialize in either computational, experimental, or sociolinguistics
informed research. The appointment will begin on September 1, 2023. The
successful candidate will be an excellent teacher, able to inspire a diverse
group of talented and hard-working undergraduates, and have a commitment to
teaching, mentoring, and scholarship in a liberal arts college environment. We
especially welcome applications from scholars of diverse backgrounds and those
historically underrepresented in the academy and underrepresented in
linguistics.

The successful applicant can choose to teach either five or six courses (with
full benefits in either case, and commensurate adjustments to salary).
Carleton operates on a trimester system, with three 10-week terms: a five
course load involves two courses in two terms and one course in another term,
while a six course load involves two courses in all three terms. In addition
to teaching core courses – introductory linguistics, intermediate phonology,
and advanced phonology – the successful applicant will be expected to offer
courses that are related to their area(s) of specialization.

Completion of the Ph.D. is desired. If the Ph.D. is not in hand by the
beginning of the appointment, rank will be set at the Visiting Instructor
level.

Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the
diversity of our student body and society at large. Women and members of
underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Carleton
College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity,
religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or
perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with
regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or
access to its educational facilities and activities.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of
approximately 2,000. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield,
Minnesota, it is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St.
Paul, in easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three
million people and rich cultural resources.

To apply, please visit the link below and complete the online application,
which includes the following items:
 - CV;
 - cover letter, which includes a description of the applicant’s research
agenda;
 - statement describing teaching experience, which includes a discussion about
experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds as well as a desire to
teach at an undergraduate, residential liberal arts institution;
 - at least one sample of scholarship; and
 - a graduate school transcript.
After passing through an initial screening process, applicants may receive a
request for the contact information for three references, including at least
one who is able to specifically address teaching experience.

Semi-finalists will be interviewed via Zoom and finalists will come to campus.
