Specialty Areas: Linguistic Theories; Morphology; Syntax; Corpora, Experimental Methods, Under-documented languages

Description:

The research area „Syntax and Lexicon“ at the Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine
Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) invites applications for one tenure-track research
position starting April 1, 2023, or soon after. In line with the
Leibniz-Association's Guidelines on career development, tenure track
appointments target outstanding researchers as future leaders of research
areas. The tenure-track regulations at ZAS foresee an evaluation towards the
end of the second and the sixth year on the path to permanent employment but
allow some flexibility for more experienced applicants.

The criteria for filling leadership positions within ZAS include:
 - excellent international reputation in the respective research field, proven
especially by publications in high-ranking publication organs,
 - evidence of the ability to combine theory-driven research with
application-oriented research,
 - solicitation of third-party funding,
 - proven ability to successfully conduct and complete research projects,
 - commitment to knowledge transfer,
 - proven ability to work in teams on research projects.

The Leibniz Association connects almost 100 independent research institutions
that range in focus from natural, engineering, and environmental sciences to
economics and the humanities. Its institutes address issues of social,
economic, and ecological relevance and conduct knowledge-driven and applied
basic research, maintain scientific infrastructure, and provide research-based
services.

The ZAS is a leading international center for theoretical research in
linguistics, with an active program of workshops and colloquia, facilities for
experimental research, and ample opportunities for collaboration.

The research area ‘’Syntax and Lexicon’’ investigates the ways the building
units of meaning combine to form more complex syntactic structures. The
research is based on formal theories, but also has practical aspects such as
the creation of research infrastructure, e.g., the ZAS database of
clause-embedding predicates. Currently the area focusses on agreement
phenomena, the grammar of embedding, parallels in nominal and clausal
structure, multiple exponence, under-documented languages, and the grammar of
code-switching / language contact.

The ideal candidate:
 - holds a PhD in morpho-syntactic theory and has acquired some post-doctoral
research experience.
 - has expertise in one or more of the areas mentioned above.
 - shows skills and willingness for empirical validation of data such as work
with corpora or experiments and/or an interest in under-documented languages.

The responsibilities of the position include primarily research and some
administrative work for ZAS. Acquisition of additional projects within ZAS's
research theme structure is an integral part of research at ZAS. The position
will be remunerated according to E13 of the German TVOeD pay scale at first.

The ZAS is certified for ensuring family - friendly working conditions by the
audit "berufundfamilie" (workandfamily). The ZAS strives to strengthen gender
balance and diversity of staff in all working areas and at all scientific
levels. Members of groups traditionally underrepresented in German academic
positions as well as in science support positions are particularly encouraged
to apply.

Applications must be submitted via electronic mail in a single pdf file to
artemis at leibniz-zas.de by March 5, 2023, and include the following four items:
 - letter of intent specifying research experience and plans in detail,
 - the names of at least two scholars to be contacted for letters of
recommendation,
 - a CV including a complete list of publications and
 - electronic copies of three representative publications in pdf-format.
