Call for Papers:
Special Collection on Public Outreach in Linguistics for Linguistics Vanguard
In recent years, Linguists and their colleagues have become more active in
their efforts to engage the public in learning about Linguistics and its
broader value to society. This special collection aims to be a venue for those
doing this extremely valuable work to present their findings, methods,
approaches, techniques, and perspectives on public outreach in Linguistics.
Example of research topics/contributions suitable for this special issue
include, but are not limited to:
Description/discussion of public outreach events, programs, collaborations,
and any other type of activities making Linguistics more accessible to the
public (and/or other Linguists). This can include evaluation of successful and
less successful components of activities. Could also include case studies,
presentations, worksheets, or any other supporting materials.
Approaches to teaching introductory-level Linguistics materials to get
students interested in Linguistics and related fields and to help students
understand the value of Linguistics for society.
Writing, podcasting, or media creation for a public audience.
Communicating how your research connects with broader societal implications.
Bridging Linguistics with other disciplines in transformative, translational,
and accessible ways.
Getting credit for your work within the academy.

Why Linguistics Vanguard?
Linguistics Vanguard is a venue for shorter papers (~4k word limit) - so,
papers are easier for people to read, thus, more people will read it!
The concise paper length also allows for quick turnaround during reviewing!
The new multimodal platform is designed to integrate interactive content,
including audio and video, images, maps, software code, raw data, and any
other media that enhances the online, multimedia content - also, perfect for
linking to online resources and websites.
Your work on public outreach in linguistics might be hard to assess by your
colleagues using traditional academic credit metrics. Publishing here will
allow you to make a contribution that is helpful for academic
credit/tenure/promotion!
Contributors are asked to submit a one-page abstract (plus one page for
figures and references) to the guest editors: Laura Wagner (OSU) and Georgia
Zellou (UC Davis). Abstracts will be evaluated for topic relevance for the
special issue, and on overall quality.
Contributors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit a full paper
(3,000-4,000 words) that will undergo peer review. Inclusion of multimodal
content designed to integrate interactive content (including, but not limited
to audio and video, images, maps, software code, raw data, hyperlinks to
external databases, and any other media enhancing the traditional written
word) is particularly encouraged. Special collections contributors should
follow general submission guidelines for the journal

Timeline:
- abstract due by June 1, 2023
- notification to authors by August 1, 2023
- full paper due by October 1, 2023
