Call for Papers:

SKASE Journal of Translation and Interpretation

Thematic issue "Translation and interpreting for smaller languages"

A significant proportion of translation and interpreting takes place
between major languages. The treatment of smaller languages poses a
set of common problems that are the focus of this thematic issue.
Compared to major languages, smaller languages have fewer speakers and
are less commonly taught as a second or foreign language. However,
they may have a firmly established status as a national language. What
counts as a smaller language is a matter of degree and we will not
impose any hard criteria in terms of number of native speakers, but
rather consider the problems that are typical of such languages.
An example of such problems that are specific to smaller languages is
that many translations out of these languages are done into the
translator’s foreign language. Another consequence is that these
languages often have fewer available resources. Furthermore, in many
domains, specialized vocabulary and terminology may be missing.
In this thematic issue, we aim to publish a selection of articles that
discuss the specific problems of translating and interpreting into and
out of smaller languages. Articles should be at most 10,000 words in
length and follow the journal’s style sheet. It is our intention to
publish the thematic issue in December 2023.

•       Full text articles (max. 10,000 words incl. bibliography): 1
October
•       Reviews: 15 November
•       Revised articles: 15 December
•       Publication: 22 December 2023

About the journal

The SKASE Journal of Translation and Interpretation (ISSN 1336-7811)
is now in its 16th volume. So far, it was published under the
editorship of Štefan Franko. On his retirement, the editorship is
taken over by a team of three editors:

Pius ten Hacken (Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck)
Renáta Panocová (Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice)
Laura Giacomini (Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck)

The SKASE Journal of Translation and Interpretation is a peer-reviewed
open access journal without publication charges. It only publishes
articles in English. It publishes original articles in all of the
sub-disciplines of Translation Studies and topics of the articles may
be empirical, theoretical, methodological or applied. Further
information about the journal, all back issues, and a stylesheet for
