Job Title: Research Associate in English Linguistics
Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition; Text/Corpus Linguistics
Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:
We are happy to announce a position as a Research Associate in English
Linguistics (m/f/d) at the University of Hamburg.
(65% of regular working hours; pay group 13 TV-L)
The position has a start date of 1 November 2023 and is limited until
31 October 2026.
The Department of English at the University of Hamburg is seeking a
Research Associate to join a team of researchers in the project “Young
German Learner English: Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency”, led by the
Universities of Bamberg, Freiburg and Hamburg and funded by the German
Research Foundation. This project will provide an applied analysis of
the development of L2 English among school students from grades 5 to
12 at secondary schools across Germany, responding to an urgent need
for more empirical data on how English is learned in German schools.
To this end, we will compile a corpus of spoken and written language
elicited from school students, analyse this data and explore
interactions with contextual and socio-cognitive factors (such as
motivation, social status). The project will provide important
insights for teacher education and the design of textbooks.
Location:
This post is located at the University of Hamburg and supervised by
Prof. Dr. Robert Fuchs.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor
Robert Fuchs (English Linguistics) and will join a vibrant working
group focused on research in the fields of data-intensive discourse
analysis, varieties of English and Learner Corpus Research (see
https://sites.google.com/view/rflinguistics/home). We offer flexible
working arrangements, a supportive research environment and the
opportunity for professional growth through skills development in
cutting-edge research methods in linguistics and data science.
Specific duties of the Research Associate include the collection of
spoken and written data from students at schools, the transcription
and digitisation of this data, as well as the supervision of student
assistants in these tasks. Duties also include the preparation and
co-authorship of research publications and conference presentations as
well as participation in international conferences. The position does
not involve any teaching duties. The Research Associate is also
encouraged to work towards a PhD, the topic of which should be broadly
aligned with the Principal Investigator’s research interests, and may
be, but does not need to be, connected to the project.
Applicants need to be in possession of a Master’s degree (or
equivalent) by the starting date of the position.
Applications should include the following:
- a cover letter explaining the candidate’s qualifications and
interest in the position
- a CV
- copies of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates (where
applicable)
- a representative piece of writing demonstrating the candidate’s
skills in academic writing and English linguistics (e.g. MA thesis,
term paper)
- a PhD proposal (optional, no more than five pages)
