Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lecturer within the
Department of Linguistics to lead and contribute to teaching in
Psycholinguistics, and to conduct research in this field. The
University of Canterbury offers courses in Linguistics for the
three-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.
Postgraduate teaching includes courses for the Bachelor of Arts
Honours degree by coursework, the Master of Linguistics, the Master of
Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees by thesis.
Who You Are and What You Will Do
The successful applicant will have one or more of the following
characteristics:
- An emerging research program in Psycholinguistics, with a
preference towards candidates working on areas of linguistics above
the level of phonology. This should be demonstrated by your research
publication history, and/or plans for future research and publications
consistent with appointment at Lecturer rank
- The ability to oversee and develop the new Language, Brain and
Behaviour Specialisation (https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/study/subjects/
language-brain-and-behaviour/)
- The ability to teach into our existing linguistics program
- The ability to develop new courses in your area of expertise
- Experience in thesis supervision, or the capacity to attract and
supervise new research students
- The capacity to attract external research funding
- The ability to work well with students and staff from differing
academic and cultural backgrounds.
Who You Will Work With
The Linguistics Department is closely affiliated with the New Zealand
Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB), a
multi-disciplinary centre dedicated to the study of human language.
Current research in the institute is focused around four themes:
- Linguistic Diversity: exploring bilingualism and multilingualism in
Aotearoa, NZ, with a focus on linguistic equity.
- Language Technology: using computational methods to address social,
cultural, and linguistic challenges.
- Language Learning Across the Lifespan: focussed on the
understanding of how language is learned, and how this differs across
contexts and across different ages.
- Language Variation and Change: understanding the mechanisms through
which language changes over time, how social factors lead to variation
in linguistic patterns, and how listeners understand and make use of
this variation in speech perception.

The salary for this position is Lecturer grade $86,197 to $104,487.
