Description:

The Writing Advisor Fellow will provide consultations to Hiroshima University
(HU) graduate student and faculty researchers on academic writing in English.
The writing is primarily papers for academic journals and abstracts for
international conferences. The Fellow will also facilitate writing groups to
encourage peer feedback and to support researchers during the writing process.
Additionally, together with the Writing Center’s faculty members and
independently, the Fellow will plan, organize, and lead seminars and workshops
related to academic writing and presentation skills. Other responsibilities
include giving mid-term and final report presentations and to compile written
reports based on the presentations.

Responsibilities: 

Services for the Writing Center: 
 - To provide consultations on academic writing in English, e.g. journal
articles, proposals, conference presentations.
 - To facilitate writing groups for HU researchers.

Education: 
 - To work independently or as part of a team to plan, organize, and lead
seminars and workshops regularly related to improving HU researchers’ academic
writing ability.
 - To assist the Writing Center’s faculty members with training Writing Center
tutors according to the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA)
guidelines.  

Research: 
 - To use the data and experiences gained in the Fellowship for current or
future research and present research outcomes at academic conferences and in
journal articles.
 - To collect information about and analyze the standard operating procedures
of writing centers at other universities with specific interest in how they
can support and improve HU researchers’ academic writing. 
 - To analyze the data collected through services such as consultations and
writing groups for self-evaluation and improvement of the Writing Center.

Services for the URA (University Research Administrator) Division: 
 - To contribute to internationalization of the URA Division by
editing/proofing English language documents related to administration and
research.

Others: 
 - To give mid-term and final report presentations and to compile written
reports based on these presentations.

Qualifications:
 - Experience in advising academic writing/scientific and technical writing;
Writing tutor experience at a writing center or similar program in a
university required.
 - Excellent oral and written communication skills in English required,
proficiency in Japanese is an advantage.
 - M.A. or above in Applied Linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL), Rhetoric and Composition, Scientific and Technical Writing,
or Medical Writing required.  Ph.D. holder preferred.
 - Experiences in publishing several journal papers required.
 - Proficiency in the use of MS Office applications skills (Word, Excel and
PowerPoint) required.
 - The ability to coordinate activities and events.
 - Presentation and public speaking skills.
