Description:
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, at the University of Cologne invites
applications for a Full Professorship (W3) for English Linguistics with a
Focus on “Entlishes in Context” at the Department of English I. The
professorship is a full-time and permanent position to be filled as soon as
possible.
We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible research
and teaching profile. In your teaching, you will cover the full range of
topics in the specified area. You will conduct research of an appropriately
high standard and are expected to train and examine students on a B.A., M.A.
and Ph.D. level, including teaching degree programmes. You will supervise
theses and dissertations, engage in the further development of course concepts
and study programmes and participate in the academic administration of the
Faculty. You are also expected to contribute to joint research activities,
both in the department and at faculty level, and to secure external funding.
You are expected to represent two research areas within “Dimensions of
English“ (for example from a historical, postcolonial, or sociolinguistic
perspective), providing expertise in empirical and corpus-based approaches
(for example Global English or Learner English corpora). You have research
interests in the areas of language change and/or discourse analysis, and more
generally in areas where various kinds of diversity are understood to play a
central role. You are committed to excellent teaching on all levels, covering
courses on the standard linguistic levels of analysis, as well as on more
innovative research-based content. Your high quality research complements the
current research profiles of the faculty and the University of Cologne
(„Skills and Structure in Language and Cognition“). Applicants will have
participated in joint international research projects and will have secured
external funding. Your proficiency in both German and English is excellent.
The University of Cologne provides a stimulating academic environment with a
wide range of career development opportunities as well as support services for
dual career couples and family-friendly working conditions.
The position is available as soon as possible. Formal requirements are
detailed in Section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia
(Hochschulgesetz – HG NRW). As a rule, the teaching load comprises nine
semester hours per week (i.e., two hours per week is one 90-minute course per
semester).
The University of Cologne is committed to equal opportunities and diversity.
Women are especially encouraged to apply and will be considered preferentially
in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia
(Landesgleichstellungsgesetz – LGG NRW). We also expressly welcome
applications from people with disabilities / special needs or of equal status.

previously taught courses, teaching quality assessments, academic diplomas,
etc.) via the University of Cologne’s Academic Job Portal
(https://professorships.uni-koeln.de) by 3 April 2023. Please hand in five
relevant peer-reviewed papers, including your PhD thesis (and
