The School of Languages and Linguistics at Southern Illinois University
Carbondale is seeking applicants for one or more Assistant Lecturers or
Assistant Professors of Practice in the American Sign Language (ASL) program
for the 2023-2024 academic year. This is a non-tenure track, renewable term
appointment in the American Sign Language (ASL) program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be teaching ASL courses at the undergraduate
level, including beginning, intermediate, and advanced ASL language courses,
ASL culture, and ASL linguistics. The successful candidate may also be
advising students pursuing a minor in ASL or a major (such as Linguistics)
which includes ASL coursework, and engaging in service related to the
extracurricular organizations and events affiliated with the ASL program.
Typical teaching load for a full-time faculty member in this position is four
courses per semester with a one course per year reduction for participation in
service activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher in Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Special
Education with a concentration in ASL and/or interpreting, ASL Linguistics,
ASL Teaching, Sign Language Interpreting or related field –OR– Master’s degree
in any discipline and national certification from the Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf (RID) or certification from the American Sign Language Teachers
Association (ASLTA).
- Native or near-native proficiency in ASL.
- Demonstrated ability teaching ASL to adult learners in a post-secondary
academic or industry environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous higher education teaching experience. Master’s degree or higher in
ASL Linguistics or ASL pedagogy and ability to teach courses that are
crosslisted in ASL and in Linguistics.
