English Phonetics and Phonology
A Course for Arab Students

This book is an outcome of teaching phonetics and phonology to graduate and
postgraduate students in different universities in the Middle East for more
than twenty years. During this time, the students and the author have felt the
need for a coursebook in phonetics and phonology with an eye of comparison
between the two languages, Arabic and English. To deeply understand how
English and Arabic work in segmental and suprasegmental levels, different
topics in phonetics and phonology syllabus are discussed in this book. In
order to separate segmental  and suprasegmental levels, the book is divided
into two sections: Phonetics & Phonology. In the phonetics section, the book
discusses the definition of phonetics, vocal organs, and detailed description
of English consonants and vowels with a comparison between Arabic and English
consonants and vowels.
In the phonology level, the book defines phonology and draws clear distinction
between phonetics and phonology. It also discusses phonemes and allophones
with examples from Arabic and English. Extensive exercises on broad and narrow
transcription are provided. The prosody of English and Arabic has been
discussed in terms of syllable structure, phonological processes, stress and
intonation. The theory of Distinctive Features are presented with extensive
tasks and exercises. Each chapter is followed by extensive T/F, MCQs and
direct questions exercises. Phonetic symbols used in this book are based on
the International Phonetic Alphabet Chart (IPA).
