Heritage languages generally refer to languages that are passed down
from generation to generation, often within families or communities,
and are not or taught systematically. Heritage language learning and
teaching have emerged as a dynamic field of research and practice in
the context of increasing linguistic diversity and globalization,
giving way to various facets such as resource center, publications,
conferences, professional developments and workshops. It is evident
that the number of heritage Arabic learners has increased due to the
rise of migration to foreign countries, and the tendency to enroll
Arab children in international schools rather than local ones,
particularly in the Arab Gulf countries. However, there is still a
lack of substantial research in the field of teaching Arabic as a
heritage language, as well as a shortage of proper training,
curricula, and resources for both Arabic teachers and learners. The
Conference on Arabic as a Heritage Language provides a forum for
researchers and practitioners to share their insights, experiences,
and innovations in this field. It offers an opportunity to explore
current issues and trends in heritage language education, to discuss
effective pedagogical approaches and strategies, and to address the
complex sociolinguistic and cultural dimensions of heritage language
learning and teaching.

Call for Papers:

We welcome papers on a wide range of topics related to heritage
language education, including but not limited to:

Heritage language acquisition and development
Bilingualism and biliteracy
Language maintenance and shift
Pedagogical approaches and strategies
Heritage language curriculum development
Assessment and evaluation of heritage language proficiency
Sociolinguistic and cultural aspects of heritage language education
Heritage language policy and planning

We invite all those interested to submit an abstract of up to 300
words on their intended contribution and a short biography.

Guidelines for participation:
1. The research must be original and not previously published.
2. The full paper should be submitted before the conference.
3. All submitted materials are subject to peer review.
4. Paper length up to 9,000 words.
5. Abstracts and papers are accepted in Arabic and English.

Important dates:
May 15, 2023: Deadline for receiving abstracts.
May 30, 2023: Deadline for responses to accepted abstracts.
December 8, 2023: Deadline for receiving full papers.
24-25 February 2024: Date of the conference.

Publication:
Selected and refereed papers will be published in a book.
